The Centre for Cardiovascular Investigations will launch a Distinguished Scientist Lecture series with nationally renowned cardiologist Dr. Gavin Oudit on Tuesday, October 27.
Oudit, a staff cardiologist and clinician-scientist at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, University of Alberta, will focus his talk on Translational Approaches for Novel Heart Failure Therapies: Time for Personalized Medicine?
His presentation will take place in OVC’s Pathobiology 1810 at 12:30-1:45 p.m. on October 27 with an introduction by Dr. Malcolm Campbell, Vice President Research, University of Guelph.
Oudit’s research activities are diverse with a primary emphasis on heart failure and arrhythmias. His clinical activity places a primary emphasis on heart failure which includes patients with iron-overload cardiomyopathy, Fabry’s disease, metabolic disorders and idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. He is a Canada Research Chair in Heart Failure.
The new Cardiovascular Centre, recently launched at the University of Guelph, involves nine lead cardiovascular scientists and clinicians, as well as dozens of collaborators, graduate and undergraduate students from across the University and beyond. It’s one of a few centres worldwide looking at cardiovascular disease all the way from single molecules to clinical applications.
“Dr. Gavin Oudit is one of the leaders in Canada in heart failure research and we are thrilled to have him visit as the first Distinguished Speaker at the Centre for Cardiovascular Investigations at the University of Guelph,” says heart researcher Dr. Tami Martino, Department of Biomedical Sciences, who heads up the Centre.
In addition to his talk, Oudit will also tour the Comparative Clinical Research Facility (CCRF) and meet with faculty and graduate students connected with the Cardiovascular Centre.
Oudit completed his BSc, MSc and MD studies at the University of Toronto. He then completed training in Internal Medicine and the Clinician-Investigator Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, followed by training in Adult Cardiology, all at the University of Toronto. He completed a four-year post-doctoral fellowship in the molecular biology of heart failure. He is a Canada Research Chair in Heart Failure.
He is a full member of Canadian
Cardiovascular Society (CCS), American College of Cardiology (ACC)
American Heart Association (AHA), European Society of Cardiology (ESC),
Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA).
Dr. Oudit’s talk for the Centre for Cardiovascular Investigations Distinguished Scientist Lecture Series will be sponsored by Elanco.
