OVC students paid tribute to long-serving faculty and staff members in the Department of Biomedical Sciences last week.

On Thursday, the Class of 2015 Scarlett Stags presented a hockey jersey to Dr. Shigeto Yamashiro, naming him an “Honorary Stag” as one of their honorary class presidents.

Dr. Yamashiro was chosen because the class formed a strong bond with him, through his genuine care for students and dedication to teaching, said Class of 2015 member Sarah Kramer.

It is an OVC tradition that each class picks one faculty member at the end of each academic year (phase 1, 2, and 3) to be their honorary class presidents. The three presidents join the students during convocation at the end of the four-year DVM program. Presidents are chosen by class nomination and vote based on their mentorship, leadership, and teaching style.

Students from all four phases organized a surprise get-together to celebrate anatomy technician Roman Poterski’s 25 years of service at U of G.

The group gathered in the anatomy lab on Friday at lunchtime and surprised Roman, fellow technician Dave Robinson and Dr. Jeff Thomason. In appreciation for his dedication to students, Poterski received a gift from the students, who also acknowledged Robinson’s 30-plus years of service to U of G.
