The smallest chance encounters can alter people’s lives in the profound and unimaginable ways, says one of the organizers of the 2014 Global Development Symposium.

Writing on the GuelphGDSblog, Prof. Sally Humphries, director of International Development Studies at U of G, reflects on meeting Honduran agronomist Jose Jiminez 20 years ago and how that encounter changed her life and hundreds of others.

Humprhies and Jiminez have collaborated on numerous projects in participatory agricultural research, building Honduran NGO that now employs over 30 Hondurans and works with over 1,000 farmer researchers.

Their approach has put farmers in the driver’s seat and trained them as researchers who are making a real impact on the lives of poor farmers.
