Welcome to Dr. Roxanne Buck, who has recently joined the Ontario Veterinary College’s (OVC) Department of Clinical Studies.

Dr. Roxanne Buck with two cheetah cubs delivered by caesarean-section at Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital.

Buck obtained a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) degree from the University of Pretoria, Pretoria, South Africa, in 2012. After completing a one-year, small animal internship at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital in Onderstepoort, Pretoria, Buck returned to the University of Pretoria in 2014 as a clinical assistant for her anesthetic residency. In 2017, she was promoted to a senior lecturer of anesthesiology. During her time at the University of Pretoria, Buck was lecturing and completing her PhD on anesthetic maintenance in cheetahs, while also performing clinical work in small animal, equine and wildlife anesthesia. She received diplomat certification from the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA) in 2019.

Until now, Buck’s research has focused mainly on wildlife anesthesia, particularly in cheetahs. However, her research interests include fluid management in dogs and cats, as well as pain control in domestic animals.

Anesthesiology will be the focus of her research as an assistant professor in OVC’s Department of Clinical Studies. She will be involved in anesthesiology lectures to DVM students and participating in clinical anesthesia training, as well as teaching some anesthesia graduate course sections.

Buck owns two dogs, a Great Dane mix and a bloodhound, named Holly and Moose respectively, who are still living in South Africa. She is very excited to be reunited with them in the next few weeks, once they arrive in Canada. She loves to travel in the absence of COVID-19 and is looking forward to being able to do more of that in the future.
