Dr. Carlton Gyles, University of Guelph Professor Emeritus in the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) Department of Pathobiology, has retired as the editor-in-chief of The Canadian Veterinary Journal (CVJ) after holding the post for more than 12 years.

Dr. Carlton Gyles

An article in the CVJ’s December 2020 issue highlighting his work with CVJ notes, “his vast knowledge, awareness of the profession and its issues, inspiring editorials, and gentle demeanor, have created a legacy that will long be cherished.”

Gyles graduated from OVC in 1964 and after completing his PhD from the University of Guelph in 1968, he received a Medical Research Council post-doctoral fellowship to conduct research in England and Denmark. In 1969 he returned to the OVC as a faculty member and taught bacteriology to Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and graduate students, supervised MSc and PhD students, and conducted research. Much of his research focused on how the bacterium E. coli causes disease in animals and, working with Dr. Don Barnum, he discovered the E. coli heat labile enterotoxin and its role in diarrheal disease.  He held a number of senior administrative positions, including dean of Graduate Studies, department chair, and interim dean of OVC.

In 2018, Gyles was honoured with a Life Membership to the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) for his significant contributions to the CVMA and veterinary profession worldwide.

The OVC community extends its congratulations to Carlton Gyles on his tenure as editor-in-chief of The Canadian Veterinary Journal.
