Congratulations to Gary Lee, a PhD student in the Ontario Veterinary College’s Department of Pathobiology, who recently was awarded the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ASCVP) Young Investigator Award.

Lee, advised by Prof. Dorothee Bienzle, presented his study on the use of bronchial brush cytology, endobronchial biopsy, and immunohistochemical measurement of Salivary Scavenger and Agglutinin (SALSA), an anti-inflammatory protein, as diagnostic tools for severe equine asthma. Bronchial brush cytology, which involves the brushing and collection of cells from the mucosa of upper airways for microscopic analysis, was identified as an effective diagnostic tool for the disease.
Lee received the award on November 1, 2020 at the 2020 American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP), ASVCP, and International Society for Animal Clinical Pathology (ISACP) Combined Virtual Annual Meeting. The award was announced by ASCVP President Dr. Amy Warren.
“A big thank you to the ASVCP for supporting trainee education in spite of current worldwide events,” said Lee in response to winning the award. I am humbled to be chosen as one of this year’s award winners.”
The ASVCP Young Investigator Award recognizes and awards outstanding oral presentations given by residents or graduate students in the field of veterinary clinical pathology.

Lee is also this year’s recipient of the scholarship award from the Davis-Thompson Foundation For the Advancement of Veterinary and Comparative Pathology recognizing a trainee with “superior scholarship, leadership, research ability and/or diagnostic skills”.
