The Ontario Veterinary College and the Ontario Agricultural College are teaming up to organize a one-day continuing education event on August 15, 2020 which will feature topical nutrition-centric discussions for pet and equine professionals and enthusiasts from every experience and knowledge level.

Taking place on the last day of the Global Animal Nutrition Summit, the virtualFuelling Wellness Symposium - Developing Your Animal Nutrition Tool Kit will feature content streams tailored to veterinary teams, other pet professionals and those who want to learn more about equine nutrition.

The stream for veterinary health care teams includes talks tailored to the veterinary team - clinicians, technicians and student veterinarians – with a focus on advancing practitioners’ knowledge in key nutrition areas to help them better serve their clients. Topics include pet feeding practices, homemade diets, nutrition assessment, obesity management and communication skills.

The morning session opens with an expert panel discussing emerging ingredients and sustainability. Panel speakers include: Benjamin Bohrer, food science professor at the Ontario Agricultural College, University of Guelph; Anna Kate Shoveller, professor in the Ontario Agriculture College, University of Guelph with expertise in companion animal and equine nutrition; and Tammy Owens, clinical nutritionist and professor at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine.

Pet professionals, including pet store employees, breeders, trainers and other pet nutrition enthusiasts, will have the opportunity to learn more about nutrition for dogs and cats, alternative diets for pets, an analysis of pet food labels, a virtual tour of pet food manufacturing, as well as attending the expert panel on emerging ingredients and sustainability.

The equine nutrition stream offers practical, evidence-based information for equine/horse professionals, riders, owners, breeders, trainers, caregivers and other nutrition enthusiasts. Guest speakers will cover a variety of equine nutrition topics including the horse’s digestive system, what makes it unique, and what this means for how and what a horse should be fed. There also will be sessions on evaluating horse hay, assessing a horse’s body condition score, and other practical topics. Participants will also learn about donkeys and their special dietary needs.

This unique one-day symposium is co-hosted by the Canadian Academy of Veterinary Nutrition and Equine Guelph, and will be held exclusively online.

Both pet streams are sponsored by the Global Animal Nutrition Summit’s Diamond Sponsor, Hill’s Pet Nutrition and the horse stream by Bronze Sponsor Mad Barn.
