The former international president of Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders will be one of the keynote speakers at the 2014 Global Development Symposium.
Dr. James Orbinski, now the director of the Africa Initiative at the Centre for International Governance Innovation in Waterloo, will join international scholars examining critical issues in animal, human and environmental health for the three-day event at the University of Guelph this spring.
The 2014 Global Development Symposium: Critical Links Between Human and Animal Health runs May 4-7. It follows on the tremendous success of the inaugural event held at OVC in 2012 as part of the college’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

Organizers have put out the call for research abstracts for oral and poster presentations. The deadline for abstracts is Jan. 14.
Organizers will also be accepting “Pitches for Progress” — an opportunity for participants of all levels of experience and backgrounds to share their bold idea to address global challenges.
There are also 15 scholarships available to encourage international participation in the event. The scholarships are intended to assist students, researchers or members of organizations in developing countries who might not otherwise have the financial resources to attend. The deadline for applications is Nov. 15.
