Lyle Rea, DVM (OVC 1962) and Louise Rea, BHSc (MAC 1960) are proud University of Guelph alumni and have been strong supporters of U of G for more than 30 years. A new graduate scholarship in their name will benefit a graduate student pursuing pharmacology research in the Ontario Veterinary College’s (OVC) Department of Biomedical Sciences.
“Our life and the life of our kids were basically a product of not one but two degrees from the University of Guelph, plus my 34 years in the pharmaceutical industry,” says Lyle. Establishing a graduate scholarship related to pharmacology at OVC seemed like the perfect fit to the Reas.

After a few years in private practice following his graduation from OVC, Lyle joined the UpJohn Pharmaceutical Company in Canada and eventually became vice-president of the Asia-Pacific (Animal Health) division. In later years, he added a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation to his list of credentials for a combination of skills that was very useful in the pharmaceutical industry, adds Lyle. Louise became a Registered Dietitian, then a Home Economist and finally pursued a high school home economics teaching career, following her graduation from the Macdonald Institute in 1960. Since Lyle retired 19 years ago the Reas have enjoyed travel, often visiting parts of the world Lyle worked in during his tenure with UpJohn.
The inaugural Lyle and Louise Rea Graduate Entrance Scholarship in Pharmacology was awarded in April 2017 to Masters student Ashutosh Patel, who is studying how stress can affect attention, learning and memory at the cellular and molecular level.

If you are an OVC alumni you should have received The Crest with your issue of U of G’s Portico. Need to update your address – you can do that through Alumni Affairs.
