The OVC Medical Communication Program works with a number of veterinarian coaches in the Art of Veterinary Medicine (AVM) curriculum, during which students practice their medical communication skills.
They would like to increase the number of coaches available and, in particular, would like to encourage OVC veterinarians to become involved in the program.

What is an Art of Veterinary Medicine veterinarian coach?
- A
veterinarian coach (VC) is a member of the veterinary community who is
interested in contributing to education and who receives training to coach
students in a controlled setting.
- VCs
do not require any teaching or coaching experience.
- VCs
come from many clinical and experience backgrounds.
- VCs are trained to provide effective feedback to learners.
What Do
Veterinarian Coaches Do?
You will provide
guidance to student veterinarians on the use of the Calgary Cambridge Guide
(CCG) communication skills during a simulated appointment, during which a
student interviews a simulated client. You facilitate the process of the labs
and create the safe environment that allows students to step outside of their
comfort zone while practicing new skills.

How do I know
what to do when I’m coaching?VCs are offered
an opportunity to attend a yearly training session that covers key concepts,
such as the Calgary Cambridge Guide (CCG) communication skills, delivery of
feedback, and lab process. This training session helps to prepare you for the
coaching sessions.
Additionally, in advance of each lab you will receive information on the process for the specific lab you are coaching and refresher information on feedback delivery. Each lab is monitored by a Medical Communication Program staff member, who acts as a resource for you during the lab.
How often would I
participate?
The commitment is flexible. We approach you on a project-by-project basis. Some
VCs participate once a year, and some much more often based on their
availability.
