“ Pet Hero of the Day: Lucy.  Lucy donates blood regularly here at the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph to help other pets in need. Thank you Lucy!! How does OVC’s Blood donor program help pets? Pets come to the Ontario Veterinary College each day needing lifesaving  procedures. Approximately 500 blood transfusions are given to patients each year to help pets in need of critical care. This would not be possible without amazing donors like Lucy.  Currently OVC has about 50 dogs in the Guelph area taking part. After applying to be a blood donor, dogs receive a complete check-up before joining the program. They give blood once every two or three months, and donate approximately 450 grams of blood each time — about the same as a human blood donor. The process takes close to an hour. Learn more about OVC’s Blood Donor Program or find out how YOUR dog could participate at link in bio 🔝🔝#doghero

“ Students Amanda & Beverly along with Dr.Lena Levison are assessing a cow at Elora Dairy as part of the new Dairy Cattle Welfare Rotation at the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph. The course teaches student veterinarians about key welfare issues affecting dairy cattle and is based on proAction, the National on-farm assessment program being implemented to ensure best practices are occurring on all Canadian dairy farms. The Animal Care Module of proAction uses animal based measure such as body condition score, lameness and injury scores (on hind leg joint, knees & necks) to help evaluate animal welfare. The Dairy Cattle Welfare Rotation is made possible by funding from Saputo and through support from the Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare. The Rotation is the first of its kind at a Canadian veterinary school and includes students from OVC as well as the Western College of Veterinary Medicine and Université de Montréal. “

OntVetCollege now has over 20,035 followers from around the world that include prevets, vet students, practicing veterinarians and veterinary teams, alumni, industry, graduate students and more.

We are always looking for photos to share on Instagram.  If you have an interesting case, images of your team working in your lab or research out in the field, currently on rotation or other images that would help show what it is like to learn and work at OVC  please email Jane Dawkins, OVC Marketing Communications/Social Media Manager at jdawkins@uoguelph.ca with “Instagram Post” in the subject line or private message @OntVetCollege on Instagram.
