The 2017 Winegard Lecture in Physics features Dr. Rob Phillips, Fred and Nancy Morris Professor of Biophysics and Biology Caltech.

When: Thursday, February 9, 2017, 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.
Where: UC 442

The ability to read the DNA sequences of different organisms has transformed biology in much the same way that the telescope transformed astronomy. And yet, much of the sequence found in these genomes is as enigmatic as the Rosetta Stone was to early Egyptologists.

Phillips will describe unexpected ways of using the physics of information transfer first developed at Bell Labs for thinking about telephone communications to look into genomes and to try and understand their meaning.

The Winegard Lectureship in Physics is supported by Dr. William Winegard to bring esteemed scholars to Guelph to enhance learning for faculty and students. The talks are free and open to the public. Dr. Winegard is often called U of G’s “intellectual founder.” He came to Guelph three years after the University’s founding in 1964 and served as president until 1975.
