We are pleased to announce that we have recruited a U of G co-op accounting student for OVC Financial Services for the winter semester. His name is Jaskaran Saini. He is in the fourth year of an accounting major in the B. Comm program, and therefore has significant training as well as experience with formal accounting practices and integrated systems.

Jaskaran will begin his work term on January 9, starting with training and a rotation in billing services and treasury (deposits) for approximately eight weeks. His location will be announced shortly while we determine an appropriate workspace. We will determine the rotation schedule in February in order to determine his duties for March and April and allocate his support where needed, given the projected increased work-load towards year-end.

We have been able to recruit a co-op student from the B. Comm program because we now qualify as a host workplace for co-op students from the University of Guelph’s accounting program. This solution has always been a part of our Shared Administration Services business plan; the goal being to ensure that we can cover absences and provide additional support during peak times with minimal service disruption. However, implementation was delayed until this time-frame as qualification for this program was dependent upon the successful transition of our services into a best practice model as well as full- resolution of the 17 audit compliance issues. The University’s co-op program provides both a cost effective solution to employers and a real-world employment experience to students seeking a career in accounting. These students work full-time for 15 weeks during the fall or winter semesters. We believe that this concept is an excellent strategy to bring qualified support for Shared Administration Services, and at the same time give back to the University by providing opportunities for undergraduate student training.

We know that you will all welcome Jaskaran to OVC SAS and specifically Financial Services and provide him with a positive, supportive experience during his work-term. We will be assessed as a host workplace during his placement and so it is important that we consistently facilitate his performance and encourage him in the development of his workplace learning goals.
