Pop Med Seminar Series
Speaker: Dr. Derek Haley, MSc, PhD
Associate Professor, Dept. of Population Medicine
Topic: The Stress of Weaning Beef Cattle
Many consider the relationship between a mother and baby to be sacred. Yet, for most animals managed by humans that relationship is severed suddenly, and prematurely. In the specific case of mammals, weaning is imposed in an extremely artificial way, making the process very stressful. Among farmed animal species, that stress interrupts normal growth and behaviour for several days. This talk will focus on the sources of distress associated with weaning beef cattle, and what can be done to ease transition to independence.
