“ Fourth year vet student Marissa is finishing up her last rotations. “The primary health care rotation at the OVC Smith Lane Animal Hospital in the Hill’s Pet Nutrition Primary Healthcare Centre allows fourth year student veterinarians to practice taking the lead in the types of appointments that we will see as general practitioners. We are fortunate to be able to handle everything from new puppy & kitten appointments to adult & geriatric wellness exams, including sick and emergent cases. For example, Riley, a handsome senior Shetland Sheepdog, came to see us for some stiffness in his hind legs. Like humans, our dogs and cats can develop osteoarthritis as they age, which can result in them being stiff or slow to move around. We suspected that this is what was causing the changes that Riley’s owners were seeing at home. There are many treatment options for arthritis in our pets, including pain medication, diets that include glucosamine and chondroitin, and physical therapy to name a few. Providing the opportunity for our older four legged family members to perform low impact exercise, like swimming or walking on the underwater treadmill offer through OVC’s Fitness and Rehabilitation Service, can help to maintain muscle mass and prevent stiffness in their aging joints. The opportunity to fine tune the skills that we have been learning throughout our time at OVC is critical to helping us transition from student veterinarians to practicing clinicians. Being able to interact with clients and patients and manage a case from start to finish are two of the many reasons that make the OVC Smith Lane Animal Hospital an amazing learning environment for us.” Thanks so much for sharing Marissa.  Good luck in your last set of exams #OVC2016! #sheltie

“ Update on Autumn: Remember OVC’s Dr. Danielle Richardson’s (@d_richardson1) Golden that had to be rushed to ICU for a thoracoscopicpericardectomy a few weeks ago?  Danielle and her family are happy to report she is doing well back at home. “This is a little video of Autumn. She is doing fantastic!!! She is eating better and has more energy than she has in awhile! She is a lucky little girl and we couldn’t be more thankful!” Enjoy! “
