Recent UofG honorary doctorate Suzi Beber exemplifies what a caring person can do to make a difference – in the lives of animals and people.

A former high school teacher and vice-principal, Beber’s life took a different turn after complications following routine surgery in the early 1990s.

She created the Smiling Blue Skies Cancer Fund to honour the memory of her golden retriever puppy Blues who helped her through the physical and emotional challenges of recovery. Since then, Beber’s Smiling Blue Skies Cancer Fund has raised more than $1.6 million dollars for OVC Pet Trust, supporting their quest to find more and better ways to deal with and understand the complex and devastating disease of cancer.

The impact of Beber’s teaching career has also received recent accolades.  An article with Kristine Stewart, Vice-president of media for North America at Twitter, in the Professionally Speaking magazine March 2016 issue, lauds Beber’s success as a high school teacher.

In the article, Stewart recalls her time with Beber as the most formative aspect of her life, adding she thinks of her with gratitude all of the time.
