Post 1:

An exciting week for our second year DVM students who had their first surgery lab learning sessions on aseptic techniques prior to surgery. Thanks for sharing Joanna and Caitlin! “This is the moment we have all been waiting for. Second year is a little intimidating and between POD and Pharmacology (not to mention Therio), it can feel pretty hectic at times. However, there is a silver lining- surgery! Well.. pseudo-surgery. Instead of practicing incisions and suturing on animals, we are fortunate enough at OVC to be given a DASIE. A DASIE is a fabric-tube with layers that simulate the layers of tissue in the body. The idea is to create incisions and practice different suturing patterns to prepare for third and fourth year. As a student veterinarian the chance to develop our surgical skills is one of the first real tastes of being a veterinarian and it develop skills that are critical in our careers. But all seriousness aside, it’s a lot of fun and definitely a highlight of second year so far!”

“Congrats to The Scooby Doos (1st place) and The Ruff Oaties (2nd place) winners at the inaugural “OVC COC Dog House Challenge”, sponsored by Nestle Purina (@purinacanada). Be sure to check the amazing work of all 8 teams that participated on our snap story (user: OntVetCollege). Students built & decorated doghouses that will be donated to the Kettle and Stony Point First Nations. These works of art will be on display around the @uofguelph campus over the coming weeks! #ovcdoghousechallenge“

“Danielle and Sabrina are 4th year OVC students that are on their anesthesia rotation. Possum is a 4 year old Shetland Sheepdog who was pregnant with her first litter. She was a couple days overdue so an elective c-section was performed. In order to ensure the safety of both mother and puppies, a special anesthetic protocol was selected and it was important to have a coordinated effort between everyone involved to minimize the time she needed to be under anesthesia. Four healthy puppies were successfully removed and mom is recovering well!“
